Welcome to Moerewa School. Situated in the beautiful Bay of Islands, just twenty minutes inland from the coastline, Moerewa is a semi-rural township surrounded by farmland and rich in history.

Ōtiria Marae, a significant and well-recognised marae, is located just a few hundred metres from the school and is central to our community identity. Moerewa was originally established as a service centre for the Mid-North region, supporting primary industries during the 1960s and 1970s. These included AFFCO, the Bay of Islands Dairy Company, the railways, and associated businesses. During this time, the township was a thriving hub for employment and community life. Like many rural communities, Moerewa experienced change from the late 1970s as industries shifted and economic conditions evolved.

Since 2001, community-led development has helped revitalise Moerewa, strengthening the local economy and creating employment opportunities for local people. These changes have contributed to positive social outcomes and a renewed sense of pride and connection within the community. Education has long been an important part of Moerewa’s story. The town once supported Moerewa Primary School, Ōtiria Primary School, and Bay of Islands Intermediate, with a Kura Kaupapa Māori established in later years. In 1997, Ōtiria Primary School and Bay of Islands Intermediate merged to form Ōtiria School.

In 2005, as part of an Education Development Initiative (EDI), Moerewa Primary School and Ōtiria School were merged to create Moerewa School, located on the former Bay of Islands Intermediate site. Today, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Taumarere continues to operate on the former Moerewa Primary School site. The merger brought together tamariki, kaiako, and whānau from across the community. A key focus was building strong relationships and developing a shared school culture — one that reflects innovative practice while honouring the strengths and traditions of both former schools.

Today, Moerewa School works in partnership with whānau to uphold their hopes and aspirations for their tamariki, nurturing learners who are confident, connected, and proud of who they are.
